The first building block set made of wood was developed in 1840 by Friedrich Froebel. The blocks were not very well made and often collapsed because of manufacturing flaws. In 1875 the brothers Otto and Gustav Lilienthal developed a method of manufacturing precisely shaped building blocks using quartz sand, powdered chalk and linseed oil, as an alternative to the rather unstable wooden blocks.
